Kindergarten Supply List – She Needs What?

So on June 4th I went with my daughter to the school where she will be attending kindergarten in order for her to get tested for placement. While we were there the teacher coordinating the testing gave the parents a packet for Kindergarten and also a supply list. I didn’t even get to look at the packet because I was blown away by the supply list. It is amazing that the school budget does not cover these items. Then one of the parents said that we will get letters at home saying that we have to bring them all in again. The one thing that bothers me is that all of the items are apparently community items. Which means I am not supplying my daughter I am supplying items for the whole classroom. Here is the list:

  1. 2 pocket folders
  2. 2 large boxes of tissues
  3. 1 pkg of sharpened pencils
  4. 3 boxes of 24 Crayola Crayons
  5. 3 large (7.6 oz.) bottles of Elmer’s School Glue
  6. 12 small glue sticks
  7. 1 paint smock
  8. 1 pair of Fiskar Scissors
  9. 4 boxes of baby wipes
  10. 1 box of jumbo (2 1/2 gallon) Ziplock bags
  11. 1 box (1 gallon) Ziplock bags
  12. 1 Box quart size Ziplock Bags with zipper
  13. 1 box of colored pencils
  14. 1 box crayola markers
  15. 1 – 4pk. Expo Dry Erase Markers (thin) black markers
  16. 1 box of black dry erase chisel markers
  17. 1 set of water color paints
  18. 1 bottle of tacky glue
  19. 4 pack of Play doh
  20. 1 pkg of paperplates

Really! These items seem a little excessive for kindergarten. What does the school provide? The paper? I do not live an a rich district. What about all of the kids whose parents cannot afford to buy all of these items? Then when one of the parents said we need to bring the list in numerous times that made me wonder. Where does all the money go?
